Wizards of the Coast is set to release six Standard-legal sets in 2025, starting with February’s Aetherdrift and concluding with an unannounced Universes Beyond set. Click here to learn more about Aetherdrift. The lineup includes Tarkir Dragonstorm, Final Fantasy, Edge of Eternities, and Marvel’s Spider-Man. But which of these sets are based on Magic: The Gathering's original intellectual properties (IP), and which aren’t? Let’s dive in.
The first release of the year, Aetherdrift, takes us to Magic’s own Universe, featuring an exhilarating race across three planes. Click here to explore the plane in detail. This set launches on February 14th—just in time for Valentine’s Day!
Following Aetherdrift is Tarkir Dragonstorm, which revisits the beloved plane of Tarkir, famed for its Khans and Dragons. While details are sparse, the Magic website teases, “Fight Dragons with Dragons,” suggesting a dragon-filled adventure for fans of these iconic creatures. Dragonstorm is scheduled for release on April 11th.
The third set, Final Fantasy, brings one of the most iconic franchises in gaming into the Magic universe. According to the MTG website, “The Entire Final Fantasy Saga is Here,” showcasing epic moments like Sephiroth and Cloud clashing, stunning artwork of Lightning from Final Fantasy XIII, and Tidus and Yuna from Final Fantasy X. This set releases on June 13th.
Next, we return to Magic’s universe with Edge of Eternities, a set that ventures into the stars via the Sothera system. Slated for release on August 1st, early previews suggest the return of Tezzeret, a planeswalker with a complicated past involving both Nicol Bolas and the fight against the Phyrexians.
After Edge of Eternities comes Marvel’s Spider-Man. As a lifelong Spider-Man fan, I’m particularly excited for this set! While its release date hasn’t been announced, it’s sure to be a hit. Expect iconic web-slinging heroes, villains, and plenty of collectibles.
The final set of the year remains unannounced, but it will be a Universes Beyond product, meaning Magic’s original IP won’t return until 2026—unless Wizards of the Coast surprises us with a change in plans.
In addition to Standard sets, Wizards of the Coast continues to release supplemental products and Commander decks. In 2024, we saw Ravnica Remastered, Fallout Commander Decks, Modern Horizons 3, and Assassin’s Creed. The 2025 supplemental lineup kicks off with Innistrad Remastered, with more exciting releases to come.
So, which set are you most excited about? For me, it’s Spider-Man! I can’t wait to build a web-slinging Commander deck with Peter Parker—or maybe Ben Reilly—leading the charge.
We will be out for the next week due to travel. Our store will be open again March 31st, 2025. Just in time for Tarkir: Dragonstorm
